Wie haben Künstler:innen des afrikanischen Kontinents und seiner Diaspora den Alltag in den letzten 100 Jahren erlebt und künstlerisch verarbeitet? Um diese Frage zu beantworten, unternahm das Team rund um Koyo Kouoh, Direktorin und leitende Kuratorin des Zeitz MOCAA im südafrikanischen Kapstadt, eine intensive Recherche. Das Resultat ist eine umfassende Schau, die Werke von rund 120 Künstler:innen vereint: Ein Kaleidoskop, das der afrikanischen figurativen Malerei der letzten 100 Jahre gewidmet ist. Damit ist dem Museum eine bahnbrechende Ausstellung geglückt, die gesehen werden will – und die 2024 den Weg ins Kunstmuseum Basel findet.
Der Titel der Ausstellung ist inspiriert von der Netflix-Miniserie When They See Us (2019) der afroamerikanischen Regisseurin Ava DuVernay, in der thematisiert wird, wie Schwarze Jugendliche von Weissen als potenzielle Verbrecher:innen und damit als Bedrohung gesehen werden. Der Austausch des «They» zu «We» im Ausstellungstitel steht für eine Umkehr der Perspektive: Die ausgestellten Werke rücken die Sichtweise der Künstler:innen ins Zentrum. Die über 150 Kunstwerke werden in sechs Kapitel eingeteilt. Sie tragen die Titel «Alltag», «Freude und Ausgelassenheit», «Ruhe», «Sinnlichkeit», «Spiritualität» sowie «Triumph und Emanzipation».
Mit der facettenreichen Sonderausstellung im Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart möchten wir die figurative Malerei aus Afrika und der afrikanischen Diaspora seit den 1920er Jahren vorstellen. Soundstationen sowie eine stimmungsvolle Szenografie ermöglichen zusätzliche Lesarten. Zudem wird in Kooperation mit Partner:innen ein vielschichtiges Rahmenprogramm angeboten.
