Comment les artistes africains et de la diaspora africaine ont-ils mis en scène leur vécu dans leur peinture au cours des cent dernières années ? Pour répondre à cette question, Koyo Kouoh, directrice du Zeitz MOCAA du Cap (Afrique du Sud), s’est lancée dans une recherche intensive avec son équipe. Le résultat est une grande exposition où sont réunies les œuvres de 120 artistes, gigantesque kaléidoscope qui raconte un siècle de peinture figurative panafricaine. Cette rétrospective inédite du Zeitz MOCAA, qui demande à être vue, va maintenant être présentée au Kunstmuseum Basel.
Intitulée When We See Us (Lorsque nous nous voyons), l’exposition renvoie à la minisérie de Netflix When They See Us (2019) de la réalisatrice afro-américaine Ava DuVernay, inspirée de l’affaire de la joggeuse de Central Park, dans laquelle des adolescents Afro-américains furent victimes d’une erreur judiciaire à cause de préjugés racistes. L’exposition opère un changement de perspective en remplaçant le “They” par un “We” dans le titre. Ici ce sont les artistes qui montrent dans leurs œuvres comment ils voient leur propre condition. Leurs quelque deux cents peintures sont déclinées en six thèmes : « Le quotidien », « Joie et allégresse », « Repos », « Sensualité », « Spiritualité » et « Triomphe et émancipation ».
Dans cette rétrospective aux multiples facettes d’un siècle d’art panafricain, des stations sonores ainsi qu’une scénographie pleine d’atmosphère permettent de contextualiser les œuvres et de mieux les cerner. En outre, un programme varié, proposé en coopération avec divers partenaires, vient compléter l’exposition.
