Kaum ein Lebensbereich, der heute nicht von Fotografie geprägt wäre. Quer durch Alltag und Gesellschaft, Kunst, Industrie und Wirtschaft, Forschung und Wissenschaft hindurch ist das fotografische Bild präsent. Als Medium der industriellen Reproduktion der ersten Stunde scheint die Fotografie für die gegenwärtigen Kreisläufe sozialer Medien und digitaler Bildtechnologien prädestiniert. Ob in virtueller oder physischer Form, die Produktion von Fotografie nimmt stetig zu und lagert sich in privaten Sammlungen, in institutionellen Archiven als auch digitalen Datenbanken ab. Die Gesprächsrunde mit den Künstlerinnen Defraoui, Henrot und Shahbazi, die verschiedenen Generationen angehören, nähert sich dem Umgang mit Fotografie aus künstlerischer Perspektive. Was bedeutet die Allgegenwart von Fotografie für eine kritische künstlerische Praxis? Mit welchen Methoden greifen die Künstlerinnen aufs fotografische Bild und auf Bildarchive zu? Sind die gegenwärtigen Bild-Kreisläufe gar als Symptom einer „Demokratisierung“ des Bildes zu verstehen?

Längst nicht mehr lediglich schweigende Speicher von Vergangenheit, werden Archive als lebendige Orte begriffen, die auch das Verständnis der Gegenwart beeinflussen. In Umbruchzeiten besetzen Archive gar kritische Schaltstellen im gesellschaftlichen Diskurs. Seit einiger Zeit richtet sich das Interesse von unterschiedlichen Seiten verstärkt auf Archive und besonders auch auf Bildarchive. Der Standort Basel spielt in diesem Zusammenhang wegen seiner bedeutenden, öffentlichen wie privaten, Fotografie-Archive und -Sammlungen eine nicht zu unterschätzende Rolle. Das Gespräch wird um die historische und gesellschaftliche Bedeutung von Fotografie kreisen, und zwar auf dem Hintergrund neuerer lokaler Initiativen als auch mehrerer Bemühungen der letzten Jahre um den „Fotostandort Basel“.
