On the second floor of our main building you will find numerous Classical Modernism / 20th century paintings and sculptures.
The first floor of our main building houses the Old Masters. But many masterpieces from the 17th through to 19th century can be discovered here, too.
You can marvel at large parts of our collection in our new building as well: The tour here begins in the first floor with artworks from the 1950s. The development of painting, photography, media art and sculpture up to the present day is showcased throughout the building.
In Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart we present young, contemporary positions works from 1960 onwards, as well as a large complex of works by Joseph Beuys.
Media art plays an important role at Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart. This is a piece by Swiss artist Eric Hattan dating from the years 1995 through to 1997.
Franz Kline, Barnett Newman, Mark Rothko: We collected important Abstract Expressionist works from an early point onwards. These can be found on the first floor of the new build.
Videos, photographs and installations by contemporary artists from our collection and the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation are on view at Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart.
Our massive “Damascus Gate” by Frank Stella is an eye-catcher in our spacious foyer on the basement floor of the new build.
A large body of works by Swiss Symbolist Arnold Böcklin can be found in the first floor of the main building. We dedicated a room exclusively to the Swiss artist.

The Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart is only about five minutes by foot from our main and new buildings. It’s well worth the trip: Here, you’ll find works made after 1960 from our collection, as well as exciting exhibitions by contemporary artists.

Once a year the art museum hosts a celebration especially for families: On our family day, thousands of young people come to enjoy an extensive program of workshops, events and much more.
The Kunstmuseum Basel library doubles up as that of the Department of Art History of Basel University. It is open to all those interested in art and provides a broad range of media.
Our large book shop can be found in the main building, opposite the staircase leading to the new building. It provides a wide spectrum of goodies: from opulently illustrated books to film documentaries to elegant design objects for any budget.
