On the occasion of the release of his book of interviews High Waters: An Oral History of the Venice Biennale, published by JRP|Editions, Massimiliano Gioni will moderate a distinguished panel bringing together Cecilia Alemani, Francesco Bonami, Bice Curiger, and Adriano Pedrosa. These five former artistic directors of the Venice Biennale—from Bonami’s edition in 2003 to Pedrosa’s in 2024, including those held in 2011, 2013, and 2022 (Curiger’s, Gioni’s, and Alemani’s respectively)—will exchange views on their curatorial approaches to one of the world’s most important and long-standing international art exhibitions.

In doing so, they will not only share insights and personal experiences but also offer a valuable perspective on the evolution of contemporary art and the surrounding discourse over the past decades—its shifting stakes, increasing globalisation, and changing focus.

The talk will be introduced by Elena Filipovic, Director of Kunstmuseum Basel, and will take place concurrently with the 61st Venice Biennale, curated by Koyo Kouoh, which opened in May.
