Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart
The Kunstmuseum Basel pays homage to Joseph Beuys with an experimental venture. In celebration of the artist’s centennial, around thirty invited guests will gather at the Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart to produce a richly varied program under the motto 24 Stunden—für Joseph Beuys. Die Ursache liegt in der Zukunft. A modular scenography of mattresses, ladders, and other materials will allow them to do things that one cannot ordinarily do at the museum—like spending the night.
In the intervening decades, Beuys’s oeuvre has been canonized and become a museum fixture; it no longer strikes us as quite contemporary. 24 Stunden—für Joseph Beuys seizes on his hundredth birthday as an opportunity to revisit real and imaginary places where he worked, but also the aesthetic ideas he championed. The program includes performances, acoustic experiments, speculations about the future, and guided walkingtours of the city, but also fatty foods. Some of the actions refer directly to historic events, while others bear a looser relation to Beuys and his open conception of the work, his social and political concerns, or his dedication to a radical pedagogy.
Admission to the 24-hour happening is free of charge
