Zum Auftakt unserer Walkshop-Reihe «Urban Light Research Group» erkunden wir Basel im Dunkeln. Anlass sind die Umweltaktion «Earth Hour» und die Sonderausstellung des amerikanischen Künstlers Dan Flavin. Gemeinsam mit den Industrielle Werken Basel und Dark-Sky Switzerland gehen wir der Frage nach, welchen Einfluss die Beleuchtung auf unsere Umwelt hat, und wir gehen Flavins Kunstwerken aus Leuchtstoffröhren auf den Grund.

Eine Leuchtstoffröhre als Kunstwerk? Inspiriert durch den Minimal-Art-Künstler Dan Flavin beschäftigen wir uns in diesem Walkshop mit Fragen nach den Grenzen des Lichts als künstlerisches Medium. Während bei Dan Flavin das Kunstlicht in der Rolle der Beleuchtung eine zentrale Rolle spielt, beschäftigen wir uns zusammen mit dem Kollektiv Hotel Regina mit Licht als Informationsträger. Im Walkshop nutzen wir Morsecodes als künstlerisches Medium und loten im gemeinsamen Experiment seine Grenzen aus.

Die Stadt verändert sich ständig. Von den Veränderungen betroffen sind auch Menschen, die in die Entscheidungen um ihren Lebensraum nicht eingebunden wurden. Im Rundgang mit dem Verein Stadt für Alle beleuchten wir ein paar dieser Veränderungen im Matthäusquartier und fragen uns, welche Vorstellungen von Stadt ihnen zugrunde liegen. If we consider art as a tool for imaginative and critical thinking, we can look at the city from a different perspective, understand it more and become aware of what remains in the shadows. In dialogue with a group of students of the Urban Studies Masters from the University of Basel, Valerio Rocco Orlando, artist and researcher, will activate a walkshop in the city of Basel to give voice to stories that take place in the margins of society, and bring inhabitants into the heart of urban life.

Beyond its acclaimed collection and exhibitions, the Kunstmuseum Basel thrives on the often unseen efforts and intricate workings that maintain its influence and legacy. In this walkshop, we want to question and uncover these vital yet hidden aspects of the museum’s operation. The Unofficial Hiking Society AG invites you to a night tour around the museum to shed light not only on the façade but also on unofficial narratives of the institution.
