Carrie Mae Weems was born in Portland, Ore., in 1953. She studied dance, then photography and folklore studies at the University of California, Berkeley. She attracted notice in the early 1980s with photographic works that questioned the cultural representation of Black people and others, including Kitchen Table Series (1990). In 2014, Weems was the first African-American artist to present a solo exhibition at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York.

Weems’s art has been exhibited on a regular basis in the U.S. since the 1990s. Renowned institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Tate Britain, London; Museum Ludwig, Cologne; and the Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin, have acquired her works for their collections. Weems was honored with the Bernd and Hilla Becher Prize of the City of Düsseldorf in 2022 and the Hasselblad Foundation’s prestigious Hasselblad Award in Gothenburg in 2023.

The SankofaRisin’ Fund brings to life ideas designed to connect and empower individuals. Initiated by Tabea R. Weber, the fund creates environments that engage with Afro-perspectives and honor the connection to one's roots in the context of multiple affiliations. The concept, "Carrie Mae Weems and Us," encourages participants to relate their own experiences and work—both within and outside the art world—to that of the artist.

The event takes place on the occasion of the exhibition «Carrie Mae Weems. The Evidence of Things Not Seen» at Kunstmuseum Basel (on view through April 7, 2024). The conversation following the artist talk was initiated by The SankofaRisin’ Fund.
