This exhibition centres on a recently restored panel painting which is remarkable not only for its exceptional quality but also for the complexity of its content. With its structure of concentric circles in which various groups of figures surround a central Coronation of the Virgin, the Basel panel must surely be a unique example of its kind among surviving Late Mediaeval paintings. The exhibition gives an insight into the process of restoration which has not only returned the painting, as far as possible, to its former magnificence, but has also brought to light some fascinating discoveries. Further, the painting will be confronted with other works, sheding light on its artistic context as well as on its meaning.
