The Artist Nairy Baghramian in conversation with the curator Elena Filipovic, on the occasion of the special exhibition "Medardo Rosso. Inventing Modern Sculpture"
Nairy Baghramian's artistic work encompasses photography, installation, sculpture and drawing, combining a daring spirit of experimentation, historical acuity and conceptual rigor. Like the sculptor Medardo Rosso (1858–1928), Baghramian skillfully explores the boundaries and transitions between space, form and material, questioning the conventions of sculpture.
In the practice of both Baghramian and Rosso, concrete similarities can be identified, such as their engagement with abstraction and figuration, their preoccupation with spatial staging, their specific approaches to photography in relation to sculpture, and their use of wax as an artistic material. In her sculptural work in particular, Baghramian employs a complex repertoire of techniques, materials, and forms to address the spatial and architectural, but also the social and political conditions of contemporary art.
