Parallel to retrospective exhibitions in the USA and Europe showcasing the work of this New York based artist born in 1938, the Department of Prints and Drawings at Kunstmuseum Basel presents its important collection of Brice Marden’s works on paper. The exhibition focuses on a gift, made in 2004, of all Marden’s designs for new windows in Basel Minster. The designs, created between 1980 and 1985, but never executed, reveal marked changes not only in the artist’s site-specific exploration of abstract colour fields and light, but also in his artistic approach as a whole. The predominant calligraphic principle rooted in his renewed interest in East Asian culture is clearly expressed in the recently acquired Etchings to Rexroth.
