The exhibition presents around seventy colored works on paper by Josef Albers (1888–1976) from the collection of the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Bethany, Connecticut. Like the paintings of the “Homage to the Square” series or the vinylite engravings of the “Structural Constellations,” the drawings evince a restrained quality defined by rationality and careful balancing. The paintings on paper in the exhibition, while closely related to these themes, impress first and foremost as illustrations of Albers’s wide-ranging search for compositional solutions and as explorations in the interplay of colors; they achieve remarkable painterly effects. The exhibition has been organized by the Josef Albers Museum Quadrat, Bottrop, and the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung, Munich.
