More than 50,000 people came to the Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart in 2019 to see the major overview show A Poem That Is Not Our Own by William Kentridge and were thrilled. The exhibition, conceived in close collaboration with the artist, highlighted not only early drawings and films from the 1980s and 1990s, but also the thematic complex of migration, flight and procession in his work. It showed how these themes already appeared in Kentridge's early graphic oeuvre, and how they became clearer and more opulent over the years.
But what drives the artist? Our documentation, which was created during the construction of the exhibition, provides an insight into his work.
