A digital conversation space via Zoom

Important thinkers from various disciplines take a stand on pressing questions of the present day and illuminate critical contexts that are driving today's societies.

The event series is a cooperation between the Kunstmuseum Basel and the Literaturhaus Basel. There are 3-4 events per year.

Elif Shafak, "Listen to each other!"

The conversation is conducted in English.

"We must become intellectual nomads, always on the move, always eager to learn, resisting the urge to remain in cultural and intellectual ghettos." So says the renowned author Elif Shafak in her essay: "Listen to each other!". In view of the divided societies, the many marginalised voices and increasing intolerance in the social media bubbles, the sought-after intellectual appeals to our willingness to listen. She stresses the importance of giving voice to diverse stories in order to strengthen values such as democracy, equality and justice.

Elif Shafak (born 1971 in Strasbourg) is one of the most important contemporary writers. Her works have been translated into over fifty languages. Her best-known novels include The Forty Secrets of Love (2013) and Honour (2014). She was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize with Unheard Voices (2019). Her articles and appearances made her a highly regarded mouthpiece for equality and liberal values, first in Turkey and later throughout Europe. Elif Shafak lives in London.
